Quality affordable custom fly rods

Welcome to Midwest Custom Fly Rods, your home for high quality hand made custom built Fly, Spin and Casting rods

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL CUSTOMERS....I will be out of town for over 2weeks in July on an annual fishing trip to the Au Sable and will not be returning till July 28th. So because of this I will still be taking orders after June 8th, but any order that is placed on or after June 8th will not be worked on until after I return on July 28th. I will be using the month of June 8th-July 8th to clear up any and all orders customers already have placed with me. So if you have already placed an order or spoken with me about an order before June 8th then your time frame will not be affected. Again....you may contact me and place orders between June 8th and July 8th, but they will not be filled untill I return at the end of July.

Any Lamar rod building supply orders will obviously be filled right away and not affected by this except for the 2 weeks I will be out of town and away from any internet connections. (July 10th - July 28th)

Welcome, I'm Steve owner of Midwest Custom Fly Rods. My goal is to provide other anglers who share my passion for fishing and the outdoors with the absolute highest quality custom built fly, spin or casting rod that you will ever own for the best possible price. As a life long angler I have been pursuing the many cold and warm water species of Michigan for over three decades now, and for nearly the past twenty years it has been as a die hard fly angler. My life stlye for the past twenty years has revolved around the pursuit of fly hooked fish and I wouldn't have it any other way. I was taught the art of rod building by a fellow angler/rod builder who himself has over thirty years of rod building experiance under his belt. I can guarantee you that the attention to craftsmanship and detail he taught to me shows in my work. I build each rod as if I were going to own it myself for the rest of my life.  So when you recieve a rod from Midwest Custom Fly Rods you can be certian you are getting a rod that will be built to only the very best of quality that will last you a lifetime.

"I had you build me a Custom Built 7wt Rod for Steelhead here in PA last fall. It is the best casting and certainly most beautiful fly rod I have ever had the pleasure of holding in my hand. You have a life long customer here!"

Cost of a custom built rod

Many anglers whom have never checked into a custom rod are usually very surprised at just how affordable a custom built rod actually can be. I build on a wide variety of blanks from a vast number of manufacturers. CTS, Sage, American Tackle, Shakri, Loomis, St.Croix, Winston, Batson, Pacific Bay, and Sevier just to name a few. The reason for this is because having such a vast range of blank manufactures to use for my builds allows me to build you the best possible rod to suit your budget.

I do not just have a "set price" on a certian style rod like some other builders will do mainly because I offer a wide range of options for rod components. Component options are almost endless when it comes to exotic woods for reel seat inserts, reel seat hardware, custom turned grips with exotic burl corks in them, agate strippers, single turn trim bands and other custom touches just to name a few will all be factored into the price. This does not mean that a rod with a nice selection of custom quality components will necessarily be out of your price range, it simply means I will put together a custom rod with a vast range of quality components that will best suit your budget. Many times I have been able to put together a very high quality custom built rod for an angler on a budget that will make his rod stand out from the crowd and last him a lifetime for as little as $130. So if you have always thought a custom built rod was out of your budget then think again. My guarantee to you is that you will not find a custom built rod of this quality at a more afforable price than I can offer to you, anywhere!

"I wanted a custom built rod for quite a few years but never even dreamed I could actually afford to have one built until my fishing partner turned me on to your website. I've been using the 3wt you built for me for the past year now and love it. Will be back for a new custom 6wt and 8wt this spring. Many thanks for such a beautiful rod. "

Why choose a custom built rod?

Simple- As dedicated anglers we take our time on the water very seriously, and we all want a rod that not only suits exactly the situation we are fishing in, but we also want it to look better than the next guy's. When you buy an "off the rack or Store bought" rod, you are basiclly just taking what a company is giving to you. Beyond perhaps the length and weight of the rod you have no say in the matter when it comes to subtle difference in action, types of eyes(guides) that are on it, type/quality of the hardware or reel seat, grade or style of cork for the grip, color of the wraps, nothing at all. So you are pretty much stuck with a rod that they want to sell you. With a custom built rod YOU have total say in exactly what you get. From the length and weight, to the number of pieces, to the reel seat used, grip style, color of wraps...it's all up to you. And if your not entirely sure of some of the options then I will gladly assist you with suggestions based on your wants/needs to make the entire process as smooth and easy on you as I can.

"Hi Steve, I had you build the 9' 4wt Tiger eye rod for me last fall. I just had to express my gratitude for such a wonderful piece of equipment. The rod you built for me was my 4th custom built fly rod I have had built in the past five years, all from different custom builders, and your work is completley head and sholuders above all the other builders I have worked with. The detail and craftsmanship in the rod I had you build is simply top notch quality workmanship sir! Your not just a builder, your an Artist! My next rod will definitely come from you, as well as every other rod I have custom built in my life. Many thanks for what you do."

Delivery time

Normally I will be able to have your new rod to you within 2-4 weeks from the date of your order. Sometimes it is even sooner than that, but there are high traffic times such as spring when many orders are placed and I have many rods to build for customers. In these instances it could take a bit longer, but for the majority of the time you can expect your new rod to be ready to fish within a matter of a few weeks.

50% deposit required to start the rod and the balance due when rod is completed.
